Why is Kirby SEO becoming a paid plugin?
Kirby SEO is a substantial plugin that requires ongoing support and maintenance, especially for advanced features like multi-language sites. Unfortunately, efforts to keep SEO a free plugin by relying on sponsorships or paid projects with budget for plugin development have not worked out. Our options were to either stop maintaining the plugin or to fund development with a paid version. We chose the latter so we can keep improving it.
The upcoming 2.0.0 version is not only updated to Kirby 5 with tons of bug fixes, but also has a ton of new features, some of which you can try out now in the alpha already.
Kirby SEO v1.x.x (for Kirby 4) remains MIT-licensed and free. You only need a Kirby SEO license when you upgrade to Kirby 5 and Kirby SEO v2.
What is new in Kirby SEO 2?
- Kirby 5 support
- A refined panel UI (e.g. dark mode support)
- AI Assistance for writing titles and descriptions based on the page content (supports OpenAI-compatible providers such as OpenRouter or OpenAI, more to follow; requires your own API Key)
- Automatic notification of participating search engines after updates via IndexNow
We're already working on new features, such as an integration with Google Search Console, a new field for AI-supported alt texts, a new SEO Overview panel UI and a comprehensive technical SEO audit (e.g. a Dead Links Checker). The feature set might still change until release.
There will also be an updated docs page launching after release. The plugin stays lightweight with all features being optional.
Why two licensing tiers?
We want Kirby SEO to stay affordable for small teams while giving us a sustainable way to maintain and improve the plugin. We also think a limited feature set (e.g. no multi-language features in a cheaper tier) is not a great alternative, so to keep things fair and predictable, we’re aligning our licensing with the Kirby CMS model you already know.
Kirby SEO’s licensing mirrors Kirby’s revenue/funding thresholds. If you (or your client) qualify for a Kirby Basic license, you also qualify for a Kirby SEO Basic license. If you fall under Kirby’s Enterprise conditions, choose Kirby SEO Enterprise.
Revenue means net sales / net turnover (not profit), from any source, not just the website using the plugin. If there are no sales (e.g., foundations, associations, public authorities), use your annual funding/budget instead.
When you build a site for a client, eligibility is based on your client’s revenue or funding (the end-customer), not your own.
We only check eligibility at the time of purchase. If you (or your client) cross the €1M threshold after purchasing, you don’t need to switch licenses retroactively. If you later upgrade or buy additional licenses, please pick the tier that matches your situation at that time.
Can I upgrade a license from Basic to Enterprise?
Yes, you can upgrade from a Basic to an Enterprise license by paying the difference. However, this upgrade option isn't available as a self-service feature during the pre-order period.

I have sponsored Kirby SEO maintenance, do I get a license?
Yes. If you supported development via GitHub Sponsors, you’re eligible for free licenses up to the total amount of your sponsorship.
Examples:
€25 cumulative sponsorship → one Basic or one Enterprise license
€100 cumulative sponsorship → two Enterprise or three Basic licenses

We're a non-profit. Can we get a free license?
Yes. We offer free or discounted licenses to students, selected educational projects, social and environmental organizations, charities and non-profits with insufficient funding. Please contact us for that directly: support@andkindness.com
Why a pre-order?
We announced the move to a paid model earlier, and building out the full v2 feature set is taking longer than we planned. Many of you still want to start using Kirby SEO 2 now and need a clear price to share with clients. During pre-release, the plugin remains free to use; you can start to activate your paid licenses will with the first RC release.
As a thank-you to supporters who are comfortable with the current feature set and want to lock in pricing, we’re offering discounted pre-orders. This helps us fund ongoing work, gives you predictable costs, and ensures a smooth path to v2 when the RC lands.

Refund Policy
If you're unhappy, refunds for licenses are provided for an extended period until the release of Kirby SEO or at least within 14 days of purchase, whatever is longer. Contact support@andkindness.com for assistance.
